MOOSEHEART, May 2 - Each year, Mooseheart's varsity track
teams host one meet - and it's traditionally been one of
the better small-school meets in northern Illinois.
In a change from the last two seasons, the weather was perfect
for this year's edition of the meet, the 34th time the meet
has been run as a small school relay meet.
"This is our big meet of the year," Mooseheart girls' track coach
Randy Rigg said. "Because of our setup, we don't have the volunteers a
lot of schools have to run a lot of meets. So we appreciate the local Moose
members coming out to volunteer and help us."
And the Ramblers turned in a series of strong performances.
None of the Ramblers boys performed better than senior Gabe
Kendor. In his last sporting performance in Mooseheart's
stadium, Kendor won the 100 meters, was second in the 200
meters and ran in the Ramblers winning 400-meter and 800-meter
relay teams.
"I thought the kids did a good job today," Mooseheart boys' track
coach Curt Schlinkmann said. "(Kendor) overall did awesome today. Everyone
ran well today."
Mooseheart's boys team is able to use its relay meet as the
start of the final month of the season. Jasper Cheneyon finished
second in the long jump while Vernon Owens was third in the
triple jump.
"We're hoping to send some people downstate," Schlinkmann said. "That's
our goal every year. Hopefully everything will go well and we'll have some
people there."
The Ramblers girls had one event champion when Basheeba Mays
won the triple jump. Ashley Davy was third for Mooseheart
in the 100 meters as the team continued its preparation for
the May 15 sectionals.
"Overall, I thought we did well as a team," Rigg said. "We
overcame some injuries and difficulties. Basheeba Mays' triple jump was a good
accomplishment. She went to state in that event last year and we're hoping
for a repeat there."
Rigg juggled the team's lineup somewhat, and some girls had
the chance to compete in races in which they wouldn't normally
race.
"We had some girls set some personal records today," Rigg said. "They
did better than they've ever run or thrown, so we're pretty happy with that
too."
