As North America learned of the Feb. 28 death of legendary national radio commentator and columnist Paul Harvey at age 90, the Moose fraternal organization especially remembered fondly his highly positive commentary about the mission of Mooseheart Child City & School.
At least two times of which we were aware, over his 57-year career on ABC Radio, Mr. Harvey issued a glowing endorsement of Mooseheart as (in the words of the 1994 commentary posted here) "a dynamic demonstration of civilized man's better self."
In his commentary of Sept. 15, 1960, Mr. Harvey had mentioned as a news item the fact that a widowed mother of seven had brought her children to Mooseheart, eligible to do so because their father had belonged to the Loyal Order of Moose.
Thirty-four years later in 1994, the Moose fraternity's Supreme Council voted to abolish the requirement that children admitted to Mooseheart must have a Moose-member family collection -- and so we sent a letter to Mr. Harvey pointing out that fact, and reminding him of his 1960 commentary.
That summer, on August 6, 1994, Mr. Harvey spoke glowingly again of Mooseheart, taking a full three minutes on a Saturday midday broadcast:
Listen to Paul Harvey's August 6, 1994 commentary below.
Our sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Harvey; Mooseheart and the Moose fraternity will always remember him as a great and loyal friend.
