Revved on by 60 Moose Rider motorcycle enthusiasts and TV star Erik Estrada, Mooseheart’s football team takes the field prior to its 2009 homecoming contest against Hope Academy.

Jasper Cheneyon prepares to launch the first quarter field goal that provided the Red Ramblers with the only points they scored in their 6-3 homecoming loss to Hope Academy.

Shawn McReynolds goes high into the air to make a pass reception despite the defensive effort’s of Hope defensive back Jeremiah Westbrooks.

Damion Moore tries to turn the corner and gain yardage in the first quarter of Mooseheart’s 6-3 loss to Hope Academy. Moore gained a team-high 54 yards on 11 carries for the Red Ramblers.

MOOSEHEART - Just about everything went perfectly on Homecoming this year at Mooseheart -- just about.

Members of the Loyal Order of Moose and Women of the Moose made their regular fall pilgrimage to the campus, as did many of the school’s alumni.

Those Moose made a series of presentations, from All-Terrain Vehicles to be used at Camp Ross, to a $146,000 check presented to Erik Estrada and Dr. Gary Reynolds as the fraternity’s donation to the Safe Surfin’ Foundation. The West Virginia Moose donated nearly $30,000 to fund the grocery budget at their namesake home on the campus.

And for three quarters of the football game that capped the afternoon’s festivities, it looked as if the Red Ramblers were about to gain their sixth victory and gain a guaranteed ticket to the IHSA postseason playoffs.

But -- visiting Hope Academy scored a touchdown midway through that fourth quarter and won Northeastern Athletic Conference game, 6-3.

“We weren’t able to control the clock, and do anything second half,” Mooseheart coach Gary Urwiler said. “Give (Hope) credit. They did what they had to do.”

Mooseheart (5-1, 5-1 NAC) has another shot to cinch a spot in the Class 1A playoffs when it hosts Kirkland-Hiawatha on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The contest is the Ramblers final home game of the season.

“We’ve got to win,” Urwiler said.

Mooseheart’s only points came on a 25-yard Jasper Cheneyon field goal with 6:34 left in the first quarter. Though the Ramblers had chances to score in that half - and in the second half as well - six turnovers short-circuited a series of drives.

“That’s incredible,” Urwiler said.

As the game progressed, Hope (5-1, 5-1) began to move the ball more efficiently. The game-winning run came on an Adrian Hurst 1-yard plunge with 8:08 to play.

“I think we lost some containment in our assignments,” Urwiler said. “They started bouncing, which we knew they would do. We thought we did a nice job of containing that in the first half. But in the second half, we just couldn’t contain them.”

Mooseheart had further chances to score, but interceptions proved costly. For the game, the Ramblers lost three fumbles and had three passes intercepted.
