Donald
L. Adkins, who served as a teacher and principal in the
Mooseheart schools from 1951 until his retirement in 1991,
died Tuesday, April 7th. He
was 85.
Mr. Adkins came to Mooseheart at age 28 in 1951, first
serving for five years a fifth-grade teacher. He also served
as Director of Summer Recreation from 1955 to 1962, supervising
the operation of Mooseheart Camp Ross during its first
years in the late 1950s.
In 1956 he was named principal of Mooseheart's Elementary
School; in 1974 he undertook added responsibilities as
Director of Education.
In 1979 Mr. Adkins shifted from the Elementary School
to serve as High School Principal for the final 12 years
of his career, until his retirement in 1991.
Mr. Adkins was a Life Member of Batavia Lodge 682 of the
Loyal Order of Moose, having joined in 1951. The Fellowship
Degree of Honor was conferred upon him in 1982.
Visitation for Mr. Adkins was scheduled for 2-5 p.m. Sunday,
April 12, at Healy Chapel, Sugar Grove, IL.
A funeral Mass was set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 13
at St. Rita's Catholic church, Aurora, IL.
