Ramblers Fall
22-13 to Maranatha;
Record Drops to 3-3

MOOSEHEART -- After Mooseheart's 22-13 loss at home to Wisconsin's Maranatha Baptist on Friday night, the Red Ramblers filed into the locker room with heads down, followed by their coaches.

They didn't come back out for over 30 minutes.

The mental mistakes and penalties that plagued the Ramblers' loss and their inability to gain any semblance of momentum on offense were the main points of the long discussion from coach Gary Urwiler.

"I don't even know what to say," Urwiler said. "We're hurting. It's not like we're not a better team than that. It's just coming down to mental mistakes."

And those mental mistakes not only cost the Ramblers (3-3) the game, but may cost them a playoff spot with three games remaining on the schedule.

The Ramblers anguish started on the opening kickoff, when Floyd Mays lost a fumble. Later in the quarter, long snapper Andy Greenaway snapped a ball over Chris Morones' head on a punt and left Morones no choice but to fall on it in his own end zone for a safety.

It didn't get much better from there. Mooseheart didn't advance the ball past its own 20 yard line until the second quarter.

Third downs were a major problem for the Ramblers' defense. On a third down play later in the drive, Mooseheart allowed Maranatha quarterback Daniel Staller rush for 15 yards on a busted play to keep the drive alive. The Crusaders (5-1) scored on another third down play on a touchdown pass to take a 10-0 lead.

In the fourth, the Ramblers allowed the Crusaders to get two, momentum-crushing 20-plus yard gains on third down on its way to a rushing touchdown by Staller. Staller's run made the score 16-7 and Mays returned the ensuing kickoff to the Ramblers 42 yard line.

"I don't know if we're thinking too much or not enough," Urwiler said. "On third-and-long we're just giving it away to them."

Two plays later, the Crusaders put the game out of reach when Staller intercepted a Morones pass and returned it 71 yards for a touchdown.

A late touchdown pass from Morones to Mays wasn't enough for the Ramblers.

"We just weren't doing what our coaches asked us to do," said running back Donald Niersbach. "We could see that (Urwiler) was upset. He showed his anger after the game." Maranatha Baptist 22, Mooseheart 13
