Maybe there really is something special about Mooseheart Homecoming.
By the time the football team took the field at 2 p.m., there had already been a pipe organ concert on campus, and Moose members from as far away as Pennsylvania, Iowa and North Carolina met to celebrate the place that is the focal point for the men and women of the Moose fraternity.
But the focal point of Homecoming is always the football game - and for the third straight year, the victory bell rang at the end of the contest - thanks to a convincing 19-0 win over North Shore Country Day.
``It's great,`` Mooseheart senior Floyd Mays said. ``Once you score, the crowd gets into it. This was a great atmosphere for us. And the Moose members came out and supported us and that was great.`` The win comes after back-to-back losses and puts the Ramblers' (4-3) playoff run back on track. Mooseheart visits Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, WI next Saturday, Oct. 13.
``We're going to do what we can next week,`` Mooseheart coach Gary Urwiler said. ``Right now we're going to savor this one and then come back on Monday.`` The contest, played in 85-degree heat, opened in potentially the worst possible fashion for Mooseheart. The team had trouble getting the right people on the field and had to take time out before the first play from scrimmage. Three confused plays later, the Ramblers punted, and the snap went over punter Chris Morones' head. By the time the Raiders had the ball on the Mooseheart 30.
``It was personnel adjustments again,`` Urwiler said. ``This was by far our best week of practice. It was a shame that, during the first drive, we had those adjustments. But we were really positive and the guys responded.``
Things immediately got better for the Ramblers, whose defense was dominating throughout the game.
``We told the guys we were going to hit this week,`` Urwiler said. ``Pedro (Gonzalez) was all over the place for us. Davon (Davy) played one of his best games for us. Brandon Moreno played one of his best games for us blocking and tackling and knocking down two passes.`` Given the chance to move the ball again, Mooseheart got straight to business. And when Floyd Mays broke a 47-yard run for a touchdown with 6:25 left in the opening quarter, the hosts were on their way to putting that awkward opening behind them.
``We went back to the basics,`` Urwiler said. ``The big thing is that we controlled the front.`` Mays scored the Ramblers second touchdown with 2:23 left in the first half and Mooseheart led 13-0 at halftime. Mays keyed a 305-yard rushing day with his 122-yard afternoon.
Gabe Kendor added 85 yards rushing and Robert Niersbach gained 54 yards and scored the team's third touchdown late in the third quarter.
Three North Shore Country Day (5-2) turnovers in the second half helped Mooseheart seal the shutout. Chris Morones recovered a third quarter fumble while Mays and Andy Greenaway had fourth-quarter interceptions.
