Nezra McCarty won the 2013 Mooseheart Bridge Breaking contest. A new winner will be crowned at the 2014 competition on Jan. 17.

MOOSEHEART, IL Jan. 15One of the longest-running traditions at Mooseheart takes place Friday (Jan. 17) with the 28th annual Bridge Breaking contest.

As with the previous 27 contests, this year's is under the direction of Physics teacher Curt Schlinkmann, who is in his 40th year at Mooseheart. The contest, in the school's Physics classroom and involving the high school's Physics students, begins at 2 p.m.

The contest is straightforward: Each student worked through Christmas vacation on a balsawood-and-glue construction from wood provided by Schlinkmann. In the contest, the bridges have a block-and-tackle attached, from which a bucket is suspended. Weight is added to the bucket until the bridge breaks. The winning entry is based on a combination of the weight of the bridge and the weight held by the bridge when it broke.

A year ago, senior Nezra McCarty won the contest when his lightweight construction held 8900 grams before it broke. Senior Oumaru Abdulahi's heavier bridge withstood 9200 grams breaking.
