Mooseheart, IL, May 4 – Every year for nearly four decades, Mooseheart's final major track and field invitational has been its own, and the Ramblers have looked forward to this meet over 38 years as a chance to show their home fans, classmates and friends to what level they have risen through the spring season.
This year's event took place on Saturday. For Mooseheart's boys, the meet was a chance to improve on the form that brought them their second consecutive Northeastern Athletic Conference title.
“The kids are working really well,” Mooseheart boy coach Curt Schlinkmann said. “They've been working hard in practice and they're improving on their times. Now is the time to be doing it and it's really nice to see.”
For the Ramblers' girls team, the meet offered a chance to show what a team of nearly 20 could accomplish where a year ago, only three girls competed.
“We had the most numbers coaching since I've been here, and this is my third year,” Mooseheart girls coach Dave Klussendorf said. “I was hoping we would have gone a little higher last week in the conference. But when I look at the times and the performances, we were there and we stepped up, and we stepped up again today.”
Mooseheart's boys won eight of the 15 events. In addition to wins in the 400-meter relay and the meet-ending 1600-meter relay, the Ramblers got individual victories from four athletes. Oumaru Abdulahi won the long jump and the high jump; Wal Khat won the 800 meters and the 1600 meters; Joe Feemorlu won the 110 high hurdles and Farook Anifowshe won the 200 meters.
“They've been working hard all year,” Schlinkmann said. “Progressively in the year, we can see improvement day-to-day and meet-to-meet and that's a nice thing.”
Mooseheart's girls got their best performance from Erin Stryker, who finished fourth in the 110 hurdles. Fatimata Sabbah was fifth in the 100 meters and the 1600 relay finished fifth as well.
“They did well,” Klussendorf said. “We had two people in the 100 meter finals. To make it there, that's good. We had one person, Erin Stryker, in the high hurdle finals and she hit her best time in the prelims. We had two girls run in the same heat in the 200 and while they didn't place, they gave their best. The 4x400 relay just finished with their best time. On the track, we did well today.”
Next week, Mooseheart's boys conclude their regular season at the Sandwich Invitational before the May 17 IHSA Class 1A Seneca Sectional. Mooseheart's girls enter the postseason next week at the Lisle Sectional. Both Mooseheart teams will field limited lineups next weekend due to the school's prom.
“This was our big show today,” Klussendorf said.
