HEBRON, IL, Aug. 25 - "Explosive" openings don't come much more explosive than Mooseheart's start to the 2012 football season.
After forcing host Alden-Hebron to punt on its opening possession, the Ramblers lined up on their own 20-yard line. Sahr Mahoney took a hand-off from Jon Hart and raced through and beyond the Giants' defenders to score.
Alden-Hebron was again unable to move the ball after taking the ensuing kickoff and punted, leaving Mooseheart with 61 yards to score. This time Oumaru Abdualhi took the handoff and raced to the end zone.
Net result: 2 offensive plays, 2 touchdowns and 141 yards of total offense.
Mooseheart continued to stop Alden-Hebron's offense and then to score on its own possessions throughout most of the Northweastern Athletic Conference contest and the Ramblers won, 55-14.
"We were pretty happy how we came out," Mooseheart coach Gary Urwiler said. "We felt we could run the football and be pretty successful. We didn't expect to have those great plays right away, but they sure were nice to have."
None of Mooseheart's offensive stars played the full game and the Ramblers spread the ball amongst a number of players. Still, Abdulahi scored four touchdowns and gained 210 yards, all in the first half. Mahoney added 175 yards and a pair of touchdowns as well.
"(Abdulahi and Mahoney) really ran like men today and ran well," Urwiler said. "People know those guys are fast and explosive for us."
Hart threw two passing touchdowns to JJ Odunsi. The first covered 36 yards and the second went 30 yards.
Defensively, Mooseheart allowed kept its shutout until early in the second quarter when the Giants drove and scored on a 2-yard Nick Beck run. The Rambers did not allow the second Alden-Hebron touchdown until 48 seconds remained in the game. That score came courtesy of another Beck run. Beck gained 82 yards on 20 carries.
"They came out right away and did a nice job against us in their opening drive," Urwiler said. "It took us awhile to adjust. It's hard in the first game of the year because you can't practice 'game speed.' We've still got things to work on, but I was happy with the defense."
Mooseheart travels to Luther North on Sept. 2 for its second NAC contest and its second road game of the season.
"It's nice to get the competition and to see where we are," Urwiler said. "There are some things we know we need to work on. But is sure is nice to be 1-0. We look at the season in thirds, and right now we're where need to be in the first third of the season."
